Ask Dr. Kusnoto
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry specializing in correcting bad bite, mal-aligned teeth, increased overjet, thumb-sucking, crooked teeth and some facial imbalances by utilizing braces alone or together with other miscellaneous appliance. Improved dental and facial esthetic as well as better chewing and smiling will be the goal of an orthodontic treatment.
Orthodontic Services
Dental specialty concerned with the correction of improper alignment of the upper and lower teeth.
Orthodontics, formally Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is the first specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both. Orthodontic treatment can focus on dental displacement only, or can deal with the control and modification of facial growth. In the later case it is better defined as “dentofacial orthopaedics”.

But beyond the cosmetic advantages of straight teeth, there are important medical benefits as well:
- Straight teeth help us bite, chew and speak effectively.
- Straight teeth are less prone to decay, gum disease and injury.
- Upper teeth that protrude are more likely to be broken in an accident.
- Properly aligned teeth and jaws help prevent health problems such as Temporo-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD).
